If you had decided to attend Mass today at the
Maronite Rite Church of St. Anthony of Padua on Victory
Parkway, you would have participated in the liturgical feast
of Saint Sharbel Makhlouf, which that rite always observes
on the third Sunday in July. St. Sharbel (sometimes it is
spelled with a C) is the patron saint of Lebanon, a holy
monk and hermit whose intercession is credited with an
astounding number of miracles. The Roman Catholic
Church celebrates St. Sharbels optional memorial this
Wednesday, July 24th.
Sharbel was born Youssef Antoun high in the
mountains of Lebanon on May 8, 1828. He was one of five
children born to Antoun Zaarour and Brigitta Chidiac
Makhlouf. Antoun was a mule driver who died when
Sharbel was only three years old. His mother remarried,
and her second husband eventually became a parish priest
(married priests are allowed in the Maronite Catholic
Church). His stepfathers holiness, as well as that of his two
hermit uncles, inspired the young boy to pursue religious
life. As a youth, he was responsible for tending the familys
small herd of cows, and he would take them to a nearby
grotto, where he had erected a small shrine to the Blessed
Virgin Mary.
In 1851, Sharbel left his family to begin monastic
training in preparation for joining the Lebanese Maronite
Order. After ordination in 1859, he began a long-term
residency at the Monastery of Saint Maron (the place of his
eventual burial) near Beirut. He took the name Sharbel to
honor St. Sharbel the Martyr, a second-century military
officer who lost his life during the persecution by Roman
Emperor Marcus Aurelius. In the monastery, Sharbel led a
life of strict asceticism, eventually obtaining permission
from his superior to become a hermit at the Hermitage of
Saints Peter and Paul. He lived there for 23 years, suffering
a fatal stroke on Christmas Eve 1898 while celebrating the
Divine Liturgy.
It was after his death that the miracles began to occur,
beginning with the appearance of a bright light at the place
of his burial (without a casket, according to the custom of
his order). His body was exhumed several months after his
passing and was found to be both incorrupt and flexible. It
also began to exude both sweat and blood, necessitating
its eventual enclosure in a casket and tomb. The saints
body was exhumed, for various reasons, several times,
most recently in 1976, at which time only a skeleton
remained. Vast numbers of pilgrims have visited St.
Sharbels tomb, and over 33,000 miracles of healing have
been recorded at the monastery where he rests. Father
Chris Alar of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception
calls St. Sharbel one of the biggest power hitters in the
history of the Church.St. Pope Paul VI, who canonized
St. Sharbel on October 9, 1977, said of him, “…a new
eminent member of monastic sanctity has by his example
and his intercession enriched the entire Christian people
may he make us understand, in a world largely fascinated
by wealth and comfort, the paramount value of poverty,
penance and asceticism, to liberate the soul in its ascent to
God.
Bob Bell, All Saints parishioner
Christ is always present in His Church, especially in
her liturgical celebrations. He is present in the sacrifice
of the Mass, not only in the person of His ministerbut
especially under the Eucharistic species. By His power
He is present in the sacramentsHe is present in His
word, since it is He Himself who speaks when the holy
scriptures are read in the Church. He is present, lastly,
when the Church prays and sings, for He promised:
Where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst of them(Matt. 18:20)”
-Vatican II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #7
Every three years, we pause our reading of the Gospel of
Mark to hear a series of Eucharistic passages from the
Gospel of John. These passages are often referred to as
the Bread of Life Discourse”. This year, we will hear
them proclaimed on the following Sundays:
July 28 – John 6:1-15; August 4 John 6:24-35;
August 11 – John 6:41-51; August 18 – John 6:51-58;
August 25 – John 6:60-69
Please watch the Newsletter, Bulletin, and Facebook page
each week for articles designed to help us all deepen our
belief in the Eucharist and renew our appreciation for the
Mass.

Our scheduled summer projects are moving along! We
have the following areas of improvement:
*The school roof project is finished quite
impressive looking, but not something you could see from
the ground! We also added downspouts to
alleviate the pressure on the drains, which will keep the roof
well drained and dry. Fingers crossed for no more leaks!
*The school library has received a fresh coat of paint
and new carpeting! New tables are being ordered to
facilitate a variety of meetings and student needs.
*The school STEM Lab is progressing. The bulk of the
work is ordering furnishings to fit the space. We anticipate
the delivery of many items in August!
*Landscaping and clean-up work begins this month with
the Montgomery Road Memorial Garden area. They will
then progress across the campus.
We appreciate your patience and flexibility while we
have these projects in the works! If you have any ques-
tions, please contact the Business Manager, Kathy Abele, at
513.686.1119.

YOUTH MINISTRY
Todays Gospel (Mark 6:30-34) is the account of Jesus and
His apostles trying to find a resting place but instead finding
a multitude of followers waiting for them. Jesus saw the
crowd as sheep without a shepherd”, and He began to
teach them.
Do you know some folks who kinda seem like they are
sheep without a shepherd”? Maybe they are a bit removed
from their faith journey. Maybe they are workplace friends,
or classmates, or family members who seem to be search-
ing for more joy, more foundation, more direction, or
something more to hold on to.
Maybe you could be of some help, but maybe youre a bit
hesitant to offer. Hmmmm. Pause. Deep breath. Quick
prayer. OK, lets go.
Before you decide if youre going to jump in or not, please
remember two things: we are called by Jesus to spread His
good news, AND, in the unlikely event that you get a no
thank you”, everybody is in the same place as before you
tried.
How about these ideas:
-look for an opportunity (or opportunities) to say a
prayer with them before a meal, for a friend, for a
project, for a good practice, or for any special intention.
-invite them to attend Mass with you on a weekday or
Sunday (include a breakfast offer if you think that will
help get a yes”).
-mention that the process for folks to join the Catholic
Church (called RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation for
Adults) is getting started again in a month or so.
-invite them to lunch or a walk or a coffee to chat about
how your faith life has helped you find joy, peace,
meaning, and even overcome obstacles. Invite them to
join you on a faith journey.
It's mid-July. You got this. The Holy Spirit will guide your
words. Be a shepherd. Invite. Open a door. With a smile,
good job by you.
