APA Reference Page
When cing sources in APA format, you need to cite your
sources in two separate places: in-text, and on the Reference
page. The below informaon will cover how to cite several
commonly used sources and how to format the Reference
page. In-text cing is covered on a dierent handout.
BOOKS
Basic format for books: Author's last name, first and middle
initials. (Year of publication). Title of Book. Name of publisher.
Ex: Bradbury, R. (1953). Fahrenheit 451. Random House
Publishing Group.
For more than two authors, everyones name is flipped
around.
Ex: Brandon, L. & Brandon, K. (2015). At a Glance:
Writing Essays and Beyond with Integrated Writings.
Cengage Learning.
For a book with no author, like a Bible or sacred text, just
start with the title and include everything else.
Ex: NIV Children's Bible. (2016). Zondervan..
For an article from a reference work (dictionary or
encyclopedia): Author/organizations name. (Year of
Publication). Title of entry/word. In Title of Reference Work
(edition number, page numbers). Publisher Name.
Ex: Merriam-Webster, Inc. (2002). Penguin. In Websters
Dictionary and Thesaurus (p. 272). Geddes & Grosset.

PERIODICALS
Basic format for a printed magazine or newspaper
(periodical): Author's last name, first and middle initial. (year,
month date). Article title. Periodical Title, page range.
Ex: Forson, T.S. (2023, 31 July). Celebrate the women's World
Cup with 15 stunning soccer shots." Smithsonian Magazine,
pp. 1-3.
Ex: Wong, K. (2023, July 29). Can I still travel during the heat-
wave in Europe and the US? Here's what experts say. USA
Today, p. 20.
Basic format for a printed journal: Author's last name, first
and middle initials. (Year of publication). Article
title. Journal Title, volume number (issue number), page
range.
Ex: Evcik, D. (2023). Musculoskeletal involvement: COVID-
19 and post COVID-19. Turkish Journal of Physical Medi-
cine & Rehabilitation, 69(1), 1-7.
Notice that article titles are not put in quotation marks, and
that only the first letter of the title and subtitle, and
proper nouns, are capitalized.

ELECTRONIC SOURCES
Basic format for an article on a website: Author or
corporation's name. (Date of publication). Article title. Title
of Website. URL.
Ex: Mayo Clinic Staff. (2023). Gestational diabetes. Mayo Clin-
ic. mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gestational-diabetes/
symptoms-causes/.
Basic format for an online scholarly article: Follow the same
format for printed article, but add the DOI number or URL. Do
not include the database.
Ex: Markowitz, D. M. (2022). Psychological trauma and emo-
tional upheaval as revealed in academic writing: The case of
COVID-19. Cognition & Emotion, 36(1), 9-22. https://
doi.org/10.1080/02699931.2021.2022602.
Article from an online magazine or newspaper: Last name,
first and middle initials. (year, month date). Article title. Title of
Periodical. URL.
Ex: Reineking, J. & DelGallo, A. (2023, July 28). Whos in and
whos out of the knockout round at the 2023 World Cup?
USA Today, usatoday/story/sports/soccer/worldcup/2023/07/
28/world-cup-2023-round-of-16-clinching-scenarios.

BASIC FORMATTING OF REFERENCE PAGE
Put the word References at the top of the page.
Make it the last page of your paper. It should be its own page,
not tacked on after the conclusion.
Double spaced throughout. Size 12 font. 1” margins.
Put sources in alphabetical order.
Use hanging indent—the first line is against the left-hand
margin, the rest are indented.
