Testers are not restricted in taking the TEAS at Cal State LA only.
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a scholastic aptitude test that is
used as one component of the selection process for the admissions of students into the basic nursing
program. The TEAS consist of four content areas with the equivalent educational level of courses taken
in high school: Math, Reading, English, and Science. Applicants to the Cal State LA (Traditional) Program
must complete the examination with a minimum passing National Percent Rank in each of the four
subtest areas (currently the minimum score is the 40
th
percent.) The test may only be taken a
maximum of two times a year, and there must be at least a three weeks between test taking dates.
The TEAS score is only valid for one year, from January to January (ex. for Fall 2022, from January 1
st
2021 to January 2022 application deadline date).
Note: All testers must create an ATI account prior to taking the TEAS. They can create an account at
https://www.atitesting.com/ by clicking on Create New Account and following the screen prompts.
After a tester has registered on the site, the tester’s personal test selection will display under Account
Information, which are TEAS at your institution (on campus or online remote), TEAS at a PSI testing
center, or TEAS at ATI (online remote.) At this screen, the user will have an opportunity to print the test
ID number. Each user should print and retain this information and use it for identification on every test.
This ID number will not change, the tester only needs to register once.
The test is approximately five (5) hours long (includes check-in and instruction). Version 6.0
or Version 7.0 is acceptable. A study guide may be purchased from ATI at
https://www.atitesting.com/teas
a. A minimal acceptable percentage for the TEAS scores is 40% or above in each of the four
categories of Reading, Math, Science, and English not the Total Score. Applicants whose ATI
scores are below the minimum acceptable 40% (percent) will not be eligible for admission
to the Cal State LA nursing program.
b. An applicant may retake the proctored test to improve their scores. The higher test score
may be used for evaluation. You must retake the entire exam. NOTE: the proctored test can
only be taken twice a year with at least a three week time period between test taking
dates.
c. It is the applicant’s responsibility to select the highest test score and upload that proctored
TEAS scores in the “Standardized Test” Section prior to the deadline. Submission of the TEAS
to NursingCAS must be submitted no later than the Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing
application deadline date.
d. It is not necessary to pay an additional fee to have your TEAS results uploaded into
Nursing CAS. You can download your results from ATI TEAS “My Report”, scan the copy and
upload both the “Individual Performance Profile” report and theProctored and Practice
Assessment Report” into NursingCAS. These reports can be added in the two available
sections for the “TEAS Score Reports” in NursingCAS.
NOTE:
Examination fees are non-refundable and are good for this application period only.
Results received may vary depending on type of test taken. Online is immediate and paper/pencil is
one to three days.
Applicants will need to submit these 2 documents into Nursing CAS:
1.
INDIVDUAL PERFORMANCE PROFILE
The Individual Performance Profile Report conveys the TEAS test scores. The scores reviewed are
Reading Score, Math Score, Science Score, and English and Language Usage Score. The individual scores
in each category must be above 40
th
percent, for the applicant’s application to be considered.
All subtest contains multiple-choice items with one correct answer. The applicant is directed to answer
each item as accurately as possible within the allotted time. The reporting system for the TEAS includes
a composite score for each of the four general areas. Sixteen sub-scores are generated within these
categories to assess specific content mastery. Identifying areas of relative strength and weakness can
help the student in preparing for nursing.
The Math subtest covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fraction and decimals, algebraic equations,
percentages and ratio/proportion.
Reading covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension and inferences/conclusions.
English and Language Usage subtest measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure,
contextual words and spelling.
The Science portion of exam covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy,
and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.
