SCOPE AND CONTENT
The papers of the Tennessee American Revolution Bicentennial Commission
document the procedure and activities Tennesseans observed to celebrate the two
hundredth anniversary of the American Revolution. Tennessee, then a part of North
Carolina, was not the scene of a single battle or skirmish because its geographical
location placed it outside the main theaters of the war. Tennesseans, however, did
participate in the Battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina where a force of troops loyal
to the Crown was decisively defeated.
Created by an act of the General Assembly in 1971 (Chapter 212, Senate Bill 606) the
Commission consisted by twenty one citizens. Five (5) persons served as ex-officio
members representing five (5) historical societies of the state while the other sixteen (16)
members were appointed, eight (8) by the Governor and four (4) each by the Speaker of
the House of the General Assembly.
Activities of the Commission were concentrated in three main areas; Heritage, a
program whereby all ethnic groups of Tennesseans were urged to re-examine their
origins, values, and the meaning of America; Festival, a call to all Tennessee’s citizens to
celebrate the two hundred years of American Freedom; Horizons, a summons to
communities to undertake at least one principal project to improve the quality of
community life. Other functions of the Commission were to serve as an advisory group
and a clearinghouse to local Commissions in the solicitation of grants, Federal and State
funds, for community projects.
The bulk of the records is correspondence dated mainly from 1971 to 1976. The
correspondence is arranged by subject in chronological order. Of particular interest is the
number and scope of local projects funded and completed during the Commission’s
lifetime. Other types of records include bulletins, minutes, news releases, and published
material relating to the Revolutionary War.
A subject index has been completed for the research.
