AAS GRAPHIC DESIGN
Application Instructions & Form (Rev. 1/1/2023)
Please verify that you have completed the following four (4) required courses with a
grade of C- or better in order to be eligible to apply for the AAS Graphic Design program:
ART 1120 2D Design
ART 1400 Graphic Computer Applications
ART 1410 Typography I
ART 1420 Graphic Design I
Note: Good grades earned in any of these courses does not guarantee acceptance into
the AAS Graphic Design program.
Please compile the following application materials formatted to a document size of
8.5˝x 11˝ in the rst of two PDFs named Lastname_AAS_Application.pdf:
Cover sheet including student name, UVID number, mailing address, email, and phone
number. A template is available on Box alongside the portfolio template (see below).
Student transcript with each of the required courses listed in section 1 above clearly
highlighted. Unoicial transcripts are accepted.
A completed AAS Graphic Design Application Form (see p. 3).
Please compile a digital portfolio in the second of two PDFs named Lastname_AAS_
Portfolio.pdf.
Your portfolio MUST include all six (6) standardized assignments from:
- ART 1410 Typography I
(Experimental Typography, Expressive Typography, Page Layout Design)
- ART 1420 Graphic Design I
(Pictogram Series, Cover Design, Personal Poster)
Your portfolio MAY include a small selection of additional work from other ART courses
you feel represents exceptional achievement but there is no requirement to do so.
Transfer students may include work completed at their former school(s).
Do NOT include personal, professional, or internship projects.
Exclusion of ANY of the six standardized assignments or inclusion of personal,
professional, or internship work in your portfolio may result in a score reduction.
All portfolio work should be formatted in the graphic design portfolio template. To
download the template, rst click here to create your own student Box account (if
you haven’t already done so), then click here to access the template and required
font. The application cover sheet can also be found on this Box page.
Email your application materials and digital portfolio to the AAS Graphic Design email
address (gr[email protected]) before 11:59 p.m. on the rst Monday in
March (spring semester) or the rst Monday in October (fall semester). The application
materials and portfolio PDFs must not exceed a total of 50 MB.

PORTFOLIO EVALUATION CRITERIA
Faculty members in the Graphic Design Area (AAS Graphic Design Portfolio Review
Committee) will evaluate submitted portfolios based on the ve criteria shown below.
For each of the criteria, each committee member will award a score of either 1 (weak),
2 (average), or 3 (strong). As such, the maximum total score that can be awarded by
each committee member for any given portfolio is 15. As mentioned in section 3 on
the previous page, failure to include ANY of the six standardized assignments or the
inclusion of personal, professional, or internship work in your portfolio may result
in a score reduction.
Design—Eective use of hierarchy, space, pacing/sequence, and graphic elements
such as line, shape, and color.
Image—Eective selection, creation, and implementation of high-quality images.
Typography—Eective typeface selection, typesetting, and creation of customized
letterforms.
Concept & Communication—Eective concept development and communication
of information.
Presentation—Skillfully-craed portfolio featuring work from a variety of media.
REVIEW PROCESS
Aer application materials have been received and reviewed, students who do not
meet the basic application requirements will be notied and will be provided with
information on why their application was disqualied.
Students who do meet the application requirements and are included in the AAS
Portfolio Review can expect the following at the conclusion of the review process:
An email will be sent to each student indicating whether or not he/she has been
accepted into the AAS program.
For students who are accepted into the AAS program, registration blocks will be
removed and they will be able to register for AAS-only courses.
Students who are not accepted into the AAS program may reapply during a
subsequent application period. Students are limited to applying to the AAS Graphic
Design program a total of two (2) times.
