Fire at Henderson 17 May 1879
FIRE AT HENDERSON – On the morning of the 17
th
inst., the business portion of the village of
Henderson, on the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad was laid in ashes. It originated in a building recently
occupied by Dr. Debnam, the fire commencing about 3 o’clock, a.m. No doubt it was the work of an
incendiary. The village had no fire organization and the devouring flame defied all their efforts. By
timely precaution the Methodist Church was saved and the fire arrested. We deeply sympathize with the
sufferers. About one fourth of the loss will be made good by insurance. The following is a list of the
sufferers:
Lewis H. Kittle, merchant, amount of goods lost not known; store house and shop estimated at $1,800. J.
H. Davis, the store building occupied by B. G. Clarke, P. W. Wyche, Agent, about $1,500. B. G. Clarke,
nearly whole stock of goods, at a rough estimate $1,000. Barnard $400 to $500, insurance covering $750
of entire stock. Post Office and residence of Mrs. V. C. McCraw, P. M. $1,500. Watkins’ store building,
occupied by J. R. Barnard $2,500, insured fully. Hardy Harriss nearly entire stock destroyed,
approximated at $500.
Jno. W. Barnes’ store building (Debnam stand) $800. Dr. J. C. Debnam $2,000. J. B. Debnam, $500. W.
H. Hughes $1,000 to $1,200. Mrs. A. H. Alley, Henderson Hotel, residence and other buildings, $8,000.
Burwell & Parham, merchanges, $25,000, insured for $15,000. Cicero W. Harris, editor and publisher of
the Henderson Index, the whole types, fixtures, books, etc, of the office at a low estimate $1,500.
W. Hamilton Young, attorney at law, law library, papers, etc., $1,000. R. Lassiter, Son & Co., store
house, dwelling and goods, $3,000, insured fully. James H. Lassiter, goods, about $2,500 to $3,000.
J. G. Saunders, goods, roughly estimated at from $300 to $400. E.I. {?} Fasnach, bookseller and
jewelier, unable to give an estimate correctly, insured above amount of loss. Green & Barnett, tailors,
slight.
A. W. Rowland, druggist, $1,000. W. C. Harris, $100 to $500. Dr. W. W. Young, store house, occupied
by W. C. Harris, $600. D. E. Young, nine buildings and goods, $16,000 half insured. J. E. Clarke, store
and bar, $1,500 to $5,000. John W. Vaughan, two buildings and goods, $1,500 to $2,000, insured for
$1,000. W. H. Harris, $200 to $300. C. Ledbetter, $500.
Besides these are other sufferers for smaller sums, estimates of which are not in my possession. The total
approximated loss is $80,000.
