17. Did you know…? Before he became the Black Hawks goalie with the most junior-era victories, Cal
Petersen served as an emergency back-up for several games in 2010 when he was just 15.
18. Former USHL referee and supervisor of officials Scott Brand served as Waterloo’s interim head coach in
the spring of 1996. Of the nine games in which he held that title, he was ejected or suspended during four
of them.
19. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jack Drury had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick when he was a USHL rookie. On
April 1, 2017, he scored a goal, added an assist, and dropped the gloves with Cedar Rapids RoughRider
Dalton Messina during a 6-1 Hawks win.
20. You’ve heard the phrase “Give Blood, Play Hockey”…that’s was U.S. hockey legend Herb Brooks did
during a game in Waterloo on January 29, 1967. Brooks was cut by a skate requiring 24 stiches to his ear.
21. John Loquai played in 29 games for the Hawks in 2002/03. In the years that followed, he gave up
hockey to become a competitive speed skater.
22. Among current Black Hawks, only Owen Baker and Tyler Kostelecky list hunting as one of their hobbies.
23. Long before the Golden Knights joined the NHL, the Black Hawks were regulars in Vegas. Waterloo
traveled there for exhibition games in 1971, 1972, and 1975.
24. For part of two seasons, Scott Murphy and Mike Brown served as Waterloo co-head coaches. Murphy
and Brown were both ejected from a game on February 20, 1982, perhaps the only time in hockey history
that one team has had two head coaches ejected on the same night. The game against Sioux City ended in
a 4-4 tie.
25. The Hawks have had some tough years, but none as bad as the 1986/87 Omaha Lancers, who finished
0-48-0. Their 48th and final loss was in a 4-1 game against Waterloo on March 8, 1987.
26. Waterloo’s next regular season win against the Des Moines Buccaneers will be the 100th in the all-time
series.
27. The only team the Hawks have currently beaten at least 100 times is the Sioux City Musketeers.
28. Waterloo has played more postseason games against the Chicago Steel (18) than any other opponent.

goal in a 2008 playoff series-clinching game.
11. Since the USHL switched to all-junior rosters in 1979,
there have been 26 Black Hawks who have recorded at
least 100 regular season points. Six of them (Tom
Bissett, Jason Blake, Joe Pavelski, Craig Smith, J.T.
Brown, and Vinnie Hinostroza) have gone on to reach the
NHL.
12. Jacob Jeannette’s father, Jeremy, spent two seasons
playing for the Madison Capitols. His USHL career
included 50 points in 85 regular season games.
13. Defenseman Ben Stadey played in 171 games over
four seasons before his #23 was retired in 1995.
14. During the 1996 playoffs, Waterloo was supposed to
meet the Fargo-Moorhead Bears, but the Bears went out
of business before the series. Sioux City had missed the
playoffs, but the Musketeers were quickly rounded up to
replace Fargo-Moorhead. Sioux City won the best-of-
seven series in five games.
15. On November 9, 1985, the Black Hawks demolished
the Thunder Bay Flyers 18-3. The 18 goals are a record
for the USHL’s junior era.
