Who Can Apply
Students enrolled or in the process of enrolling at a
University of California campus, who satisfy eligibil-
ity requirements, may qualify for an exemption from
Nonresident Supplemental Tuition. Undergraduate,
graduate, and professional students are eligible to
apply. Students may not file an exemption applica-
tion in lieu of submitting a Statement of Legal
Residence.

Students who qualify will be exempt from payment
of Nonresident Supplemental Tuition. Eligibility for
this exemption will continue until the student fulfills
University requirements for classification as a
California resident or until this exemption is no
longer available.
Exemption Requirements
To qualify for this exemption, a student
• Must have attended high school in California
for three or more years, or attained credits/
units earned in California from a California
high school equivalent to three or more years
of full-time high school course work and
attended a combination of elementary, mid-
dle, and/or high school (K–12) in California for
a total of three or more years. All credits/units
earned toward graduation must be posted on
the official high school transcripts
AND
• Must have graduated from a California high
school or attained the equivalent thereof (such
as a High School Equivalency Certificate
issued by the California State GED Office or
a Certificate of Proficiency resulting from the
California High School Proficiency Examination)
AND
• May not be a nonimmigrant alien
Nonimmigrant students, regardless of visa
category, are not eligible for this exemption.
Nonimmigrants, as defined by federal immi-
gration law, have been admitted to the U.S.
temporarily. Students who do not have lawful
immigration status

but otherwise meet the
above requirement are eligible for this
exemption if they certify

that they are taking
steps to legalize their immigration status
Notice
If at any time a student fails to meet any require-
ment of this provision, he or she will be charged
Nonresident Supplemental Tuition and all applica-
ble nonresident fees retroactively to the term his or
her status precluded eligibility. Continuing students
should see a campus Residence Deputy in the
Registrar’s Office for information regarding the
reclassification process. Students are cautioned
that this is not a complete explanation of the rules
regarding residence. Additional information is avail-
able from the Registrar’s Office. Changes may be
made in residence requirements between the publi-
cation of this statement and the relevant determi-
nation date. Students who have questions regard-
